Whilst on my travels, The Yoga Barn Ubud came up constantly as a recommendation to further my yoga practice.
At the time I was very new to yoga. Having trained as a dancer, yoga was seen to me as slow and boring. However whilst training in yoga in India, I instantly fell in love with this practice. Now yoga is a daily part of my life.
In fact, it was the slowing down and tuning in which made this practice so powerful to me.
One of the top recommendations we received from dance teachers in LA was to take yoga classes to aid our dance performance.
And so I feel compelled to share my wonderful experience visiting The Yoga Barn Ubud in Bali.
The Yoga Barn Ubud
A beautiful, tranquil place of healing for all. Set in the tropical paradise of Ubud, Bali. Not only for yoga teachers. The Yoga Barn Ubud caters for all levels of yogi from complete beginner to professional teachers.
There is such a sense of peace in this place. And I felt an openness and inclusivity for all.
Personally, I love yoga but would not consider myself an experienced yogi. Yet I felt supported and very much at home practising alongside the different levels.
Firstly there is a wide range of styles and practices here. Not just the styles of yoga but also plenty of meditation classes, sound healing, and lectures on spirituality and astrology.
As well as supportive women’s circles to help you connect. I made so many friends from my women’s circle!
Great to connect with my inner feminine energy and meet so many strong, inspirational women who shared stories similar to mine.
They also have excellent Salsa dance classes! Salsa dance is very popular in Ubud, Bali. There are lots of open Salsa nights in the neighbouring bars.
Another really fun form of dance is Ecstatic Dance. These events are open to all but have a first come first served ticket basis.
They book up fast so make sure to get in line at least an hour before ticket opening.
They are a great way to let go of inhibitions and feel liberated!
The schedule at The Yoga Barn Ubud is amazing! As I mentioned, there are so many different types of yoga and meditation classes to choose from.
Including Yin, Hatha, Aerial, Vinyasa Flow, Iyengar, Kundalini, Shakti Earth Flow, Power Flow, Morning Flow, Pilates, Qi Gong, Sound Healing, Crystal Bowls Meditation, Tibetan Bowls Meditation, Thai Yoga Massage, Yoga Nidra, dance classes and more!
These classes start from 7.30am and finish around 8pm so you can easily create your own daily schedule.
I had great fun circling all the classes I wanted to try and creating my own bespoke schedule. Mixing different styles and levels with meditation and dance classes.
The pricing structure works really well if you want to create your own training schedule.
You can choose to pay per class or pay upfront for class packages.
My favourite option was to pay for an unlimited week or month pass meaning you really can build your own schedule.
Personally, I felt the class prices were very affordable if you buy classes in bulk. Plus you are free to just sit and soak up the beautiful surroundings for free!
So if you want to get a feel if it’s for you before parting with any money, The Yoga Barn Ubud team are happy for you to do so.
There are no membership fees or extra fees for use of the mats or props. So I feel this place is great value! Especially when compared with class prices in the UK.
Cannot talk about The Yoga Barn Ubud without mentioning the superb food! They have their own cafe called Garden Kafe which you can visit for free.
You don’t need to pay for any classes to go to the cafe and it has excellent vegetarian and vegan food.
In Ubud, admittedly you are spoilt for food. (Stay tuned for a blog all about the best places to eat in Ubud, Bali!)
Even this cafe ranks as one of the best cafes in Ubud.
Everything in Garden Kafe is vegetarian and there are plenty of vegan options to choose from too. I could easily eat breakfast, lunch and dinner here... Oh and dessert!
The whole menu is super healthy and fits in with the yogi lifestyle of clean eating and living.
It’s also a great way to make friends as many people come to The Yoga Barn Ubud on solo travels.
There are a few options for accommodation in Ubud, Bali. Trust me I tried them all!
The Yoga Barn Ubud does have some accommodation. Shared rooms and private rooms. These are nicely tucked away within the premises.
You are close enough to jump out of bed and get to an early morning class but also away from the social hub of the studios.
The shared dorms are for women only and fit 5 beds with an ensuite bathroom. I would say they are pretty standard as dorm rooms go. And are quite pricey for Ubud.
There are also private rooms for singles or couples who want a bit more privacy. I didn’t look at these as I personally felt they were quite pricey for Ubud.
Staying at The Yoga Barn Ubud is a great idea if you want to be close to the studios and want to know you will be in a safe, peaceful environment surrounded by like-minded people.
If you are keen to secure a room, reserve these quite far in advance as they do sell out quickly.
Personally, I think there are better value for money options in Ubud. Yes, they are a bit further away but still in easy walking distance from the studios.
Puri Garden Hotel & Hostel
I was recommended the Puri Garden Hotel & Hostel by a fellow female solo traveller I met in Byron Bay. So this is where I booked to stay while in Ubud.
The facilities here are amazing!
They have a beautiful hostel, very clean and modern. The rooms are well-styled, with large lockers to store your backpack. The bunk-style beds are large and comfy with curtains for added privacy.
They also have a lovely cafe with amazing fresh food and lots of veggie options. Check out the smoothie bowls, they were soooo good!
Breakfast is included in the price. Yes, the pancakes pictured below were included in the free breakfast!
The hostel mainly caters for travellers in their twenties so it is quite a young vibe.
There are lots of live music events to keep the guests entertained in the garden space. This is really great unless you want an early night as most of the rooms overlook the garden.
They also include access to their day events in the price. These include morning yoga, massages, and manicures. As well as puppy therapy once a week, need I say more!
This is a really beautiful hostel and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the social side.
It's also about a 5-10 minute walk to The Yoga Barn Ubud. Just up the main street in Ubud so very safe and easy to get to the yoga studios.
Personally, I love getting up early and prefer the quieter side. So after a week here, I was ready to find a new place to call home.
Dewi Ayu Hotel
A friend I met at The Yoga Barn Ubud, suggested her hotel, the Dewi Ayu Hotel to me.
Now I was a bit sceptical as I assumed a private room would be pricier than a hostel. But actually, it was cheaper than the Puri Garden Hostel and also included breakfast so I went to take a look.
This was far more what I was looking for!
Situated a bit further away, next to Monkey Forest. The Dewi Ayu Hotel is quiet, peaceful and comfortable.
The owner warmly welcomed me and showed me the rooms which were available.
Spacious, clean double bedrooms with an ensuite bathroom and balcony. Ideal for drying clothes.
The hotel is in a beautiful garden and there is a well-maintained swimming pool tucked away. Perfect for a peaceful morning swim!
Breakfast was included. Really good breakfast too! And all for a cheaper rate than the hostel, I was sold!
Now the only downer with this accommodation is walking past Monkey Forest to get to The Yoga Barn Ubud.
The monkeys are meant to stay in Monkey Forest but they do enjoy roaming the streets every now and then to hang out with the locals.
As they are used to humans visiting them, they are not afraid to come and say hello to you as you merrily walk to the studios.
Apart from this, the location is really great! There are lots of amazing coffee shops and cafes in this area. And you are still only a 15-20 minute walk to The Yoga Barn Ubud.
There are so many options for accommodation in Ubud, Bali so I would recommend reading reviews and having a think about what is important to you.
Do you prefer a more sociable environment? Or perhaps you like the peace and quiet of your own space.
Whatever you choose, my advice is to just book a few nights upfront and see what it’s like. There are so many options to choose from that you can easily find another place to stay while you are there.
